Growing up, I never had a traditional view of work. While most kids were spending their weekends playing video games or hanging out with friends, I found myself mowing lawns, trimming hedges, and doing odd jobs around the neighborhood. It all started when I was just 11 years old. My dad always taught me the value of hard work, and I soon realized that people were willing to pay for a well-kept lawn. So, I turned what started as a side hustle into something that kept me busy during the warmer months.
By the time I was old enough to work a "real" job, I joined EB Boat, not knowing that this was going to be the turning point in my journey. The pay was decent, and I was learning valuable skills, but there was something about it that didn’t sit right with me. It wasn’t what I was truly passionate about. My heart was still with the landscaping business I had built from the ground up, and deep down, I knew I wanted to focus on growing that.
As I worked at EB Boat during the day, my landscaping business continued to thrive in the evenings and weekends. The steady stream of clients and word-of-mouth recommendations allowed me to expand slowly, from just a few lawns to a handful. It wasn't long before I realized I couldn't do it alone. The steady stream of clients and word-of-mouth recommendations allowed me to expand slowly, from just a few lawns to a handful. It wasn't long before I realized I couldn't do it alone. It was time to hire my first employee. I brought on a guy who knew the ropes and could help me with the growing list of jobs.
It didn’t stop there. One guy turned into two, then four, and soon I had a small team of workers helping to service clients. The pressure was on, but I loved the hustle. I found myself enjoying the work of managing and growing my business more than I ever did working for someone else. It was clear now that my passion for landscaping was evolving into something bigger than I ever imagined.
With my business growing, the decision had to be made: stick with EB Boat for the steady paycheck or take the leap into full-time entrepreneurship. It wasn’t an easy decision, but deep down I knew that if I didn’t go all in, I would regret it for the rest of my life. So, I took a leap of faith and left EB Boat behind to focus on my lands
With my business growing, the decision had to be made: stick with EB Boat for the steady paycheck or take the leap into full-time entrepreneurship. It wasn’t an easy decision, but deep down I knew that if I didn’t go all in, I would regret it for the rest of my life. So, I took a leap of faith and left EB Boat behind to focus on my landscaping company.
At first, the fear of leaving the security of a job behind kept me up at night, but the freedom of being my own boss soon outweighed that fear. My days now revolved around growing my company, managing the team, and connecting with clients. With my focus solely on landscaping, the business began to boom.
As my team grew I began to focus more on commercial properties, the landscape business grew beyond the confines of residential lawns. Word of mouth spread quickly, and soon I had contracts with local businesses and larger properties. But I was still running into seasonal challenges. As my team grew I began to focus more on commercial properties, the landscape business grew beyond the confines of residential lawns. Word of mouth spread quickly, and soon I had contracts with local businesses and larger properties. But I was still running into seasonal challenges. The work was abundant in the warmer months, but when winter came, the snow would leave me sitting idle. I needed to find a way to sustain year-round operations.
That’s when I had an epiphany. Snow removal and parking lot sweeping were both services that could easily complement my existing landscaping business. With my team already in place and the infrastructure built, adding these services was a natural next step. I didn’t just want to survive the winter months, I wanted to thrive all year long.
By diversifying into snow removal and parking lot sweeping, I wasn’t just offering a few extra services — I was providing a full package to businesses. By diversifying into snow removal and parking lot sweeping, I wasn’t just offering a few extra services — I was providing a full package to businesses. Clients didn’t just need landscaping in the spring and summer; they needed a reliable company to keep their properties clean and safe year-round. It wasn’t long before I had commercial contracts for not just lawns, but also parking lots and snow-covered walkways.
The ability to provide these aggregate services allowed me to become a one-stop-shop for businesses, which made it easier for clients to trust me. My business grew exponentially, and with every new contract, I found myself thinking back to when I was just 11 years old, cutting lawns for pocket money. Now, I was running a full-fledged company, offering landscaping, snow removal, and parking lot sweeping.
Looking back on everything, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. It wasn’t an easy journey, but every challenge, every late night, and every decision to expand has been worth it. Looking back on everything, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. It wasn’t an easy journey, but every challenge, every late night, and every decision to expand has been worth it. I’ve built a company that provides for my team and myself, and more importantly, I’ve built something I’m truly passionate about. What started as a side hustle at age 11 has now turned into a full-fledged business that continues to grow and evolve.
There’s still so much more to do — new services to offer, new markets to tap into, and new ways to serve my clients better. But for now, I’m grateful for the journey that got me here. It’s a reminder that with hard work, dedication, and the willingness to take risks, anything is possible.
